Vallejo Main Street is excited to announce that we have become a qualifying organization to award the President’s Volunteer Service Awards.

Any individual, family, or group can receive Presidential recognition for volunteer hours earned over a 12 month period or over the course of a lifetime.

America has a long and proud tradition of volunteer service. Now more than ever, volunteers are renewing their commitment to helping others and making new connections that bring us closer together as families, as neighbors, as communities, and as a Nation.

The President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation (the Council) was established in 2003 to recognize the valuable contributions volunteers are making in our communities and encourage more people to serve.

The Council created the President’s Volunteer Service Award program as a way to thank and honor Americans who, by their demonstrated commitment and example, inspire others to engage in volunteer service.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to revitalize our downtown and for it to be a vital commercial and cultural district that includes shopping, dining, working, and living in a secure and progressive environment. The Main Street Approach advocates a return to community self-reliance, local empowerment, and the rebuilding of traditional commercial districts based on their unique assets: distinctive architecture, a pedestrian-friendly environment, personal service, local ownership, and a sense of community.

Design Committee

In 2003 the Committee completed the "Design Guidelines" for the downtown district.
The goals of the Design Guidelines are:

  • To maintain and enhance the special character of Downtown Vallejo
  • To improve the quality of physical changes downtown
  • To promote the economic revitalization of the downtown district
  • To preserve the significant historic buildings
  • To increase public awareness of architectural quality
  • To provide a base for objective and informed decision making

The Design Guidelines document contains recommendations for the rehabilitation of buildings as well as new construction. This is the committee that also gives input to the city on applications for façade improvement loans.

The Guidelines are reviewed annually to keep them as clear, relevant and accurate as possible.

The Design committee is also working on creating a database of all the buildings in the downtown area that have any historical significance, and what it is about that building that makes it significant.

Economic Restructuring Committee

This group works at keeping its finger on the pulse of economic development in the County, City and Downtown. They meet monthly to work on projects aimed at:

  • Attracting new businesses
  • Retaining existing businesses
  • Identifying “problem properties” and taking action to rectify those problems
  • Identifying the issues that affect business in the downtown (i.e. parking, bus service, hours of operation…etc.)
  • Targeting businesses to attract to the downtown
  • Sponsoring seminars related to doing business in the downtown.

This group works hand in hand with Code Enforcement, CCRC and the Chamber of Commerce to accomplish its goals.

Organization Committee

This is the administrative arm of the Main Street program and is responsible for:

  • Budgetary concerns

  • Membership  - Online membership forms are available for individuals and businesses

  • Board of Directors elections and recruitment

  • Volunteer Recruitment

  • If you would like to be a volunteer, call the Main Street office  707-557-6246

The Organization Committee also helps organize a Volunteer Appreciation Event every year.

Promotions Committee

One of the busiest committees with the responsibility of planning and coordinating events that bring people to the downtown district. Some of the events being held in the downtown district are:

  • Vallejo Vibrations, every Wednesday from July 1 to Aug 26 - This event is a two block long street fair that features live music, craft and food vendors, a beer and wine booth, street performers, classic cars, a kids area, and surprises every week.
  • Fourth of July Parade and Festival- Working with Vallejo Music Theatre. This is an all volunteer effort to keep this special event happening in Vallejo.
  • Chalk Walk, May 9 - This event is a great chance to spend a creative day with the family in downtown. Kids of all ages can create art right on the sidewalk. Then you can stroll and look at the multitude of other creations, enjoy a snack from one of the food vendors, a beer or glass of wine and music and entertainment. Bring the whole family.
  • Volunteer Appreciation EventThis is a function of the Organization Committee, but the Promotions Committee generally lends a hand here as well.
  • If you would like to be a volunteer, call the Main Street office @ 707-557-6246
