What is the Main Street Program?

Main Street is the central commercial and historic section of a city. It is the central commercial and historic section of a city. It is the crossroads of community life and the part of our town that gives our city a unique identity.

The "Main Street" of Vallejo exists in our historic downtown area, where buildings have stood for over a century as pioneers, sailors, shipbuilders, farmers, merchants and citizens gathered to shop, eat, watch parades, buy produce, stage rallies, listen to music, attend theater productions and enjoy each others company.

The Main Street program, led by the National Main Street Center, offers an approach to revitalization that has been successful in more than a thousand towns and cities throughout the country.

Vallejo became a Main Street City in August of 2000 and has been using the program to revitalize the historic downtown area of the city since then.  Vallejo Main Street follows the Main Street's program four point approach to deal with the full spectrum of interrelated issues that affect traditional commercial districts.  The four points are:

  • Promotion: selling the image and promise of downtown to the public

  • Economic Restructuring: finding new markets for downtown's buildings and businesses

  • Design: getting downtown in top physical shape

  • Organization: getting everyone working towards the same goal
